This paper explores the potential that the natural sciences of complexity may have to offer analogies and insights with regard to communicative processes in a group and the concept of the group matrix. The paper briefly reviews Foulkes’ last formulation of the concept of the group matrix. It then draws on Mead’s thought on mind, self and society, and on some analogies from the complexity sciences, to suggest a formulation of the emergence of mind in communicative interaction in a group.en
