Abstract
A Duck Has An Adventure is the first major practice piece produced as a part of my doctoral studies. It was released on the Google Play apps market in March. The piece has been well reviewed amongst the comics and indendent gaming press and it has sold well, peaking at number six in Google Play’s top ten comic apps chart. The work has also been exhibited as a specially remixed print version at the Strip Turnhout festival in Belgium, in conjunction with the Arts Council of Great Britain. An iOS version of the app is planned for release later in the year in order to help disseminate the work to a wider audience. The work explores the emergent medium of game comics and attempts to present a hybrid user experience that draws on aspects of both the videogame and digital comic forms. It builds on the ideas presented in the paper I delivered at the Transitions comics conference, at which I was also able to demonstrate an early version of the app. The piece was also a significant milestone in my practice as it was the first fully featured app that I designed for use on smartphones and pad computers.
