Abstract
Social support has been one of the most rigorously and frequently researched psychosocial resources within sport injury. Despite many athletes preferring to “go it alone,” existing research has identified social support is an integral component of coping with sport injury and rehabilitation. The purpose of this chapter is to discuss how social support can be applied within the sport injury and rehabilitation context. The chapter will define social support and its purpose, describe different mechanisms, types, and sources of social support, and outline the process of using social support for sport injury rehabilitation.
