A practical application of computer modelling in metallurgical development work is presented. Computer modelling was used successfully at the tin-producing plant of South Crofty, Ltd., to optimize the primary stage of spiral concentration. The model was used to predict the best possible spiral operating conditions for production of a pre-specified concentrate. Details and results of this work are presented. The benefits achieved through modelling are also discussed in relation to operational practice, together with the scope and limitations of the technique. Background information includes details of the mathematical model used and a summary of the South Crofty operation.en
