We show that it is possible to determine the existence of correlated pairs produced in a down-conversion process within an atomic Bose–Einstein condensate in a systematic manner. This is achieved by measuring the competition between a one-particle transition, induced by an external field, and a two-particle transition arising naturally due to atomic collisions.en
