Sam Jury, 'Coerced Nature', solo exhibition at the Rose Art Museum, Waltham, USA, 13 Feb - 9 June 2013.
A body of video works produced or commissioned for a solo museum exhibition of onsite or offsite installations made under the research framework of ‘Suspended Traumas’ focusing on filmic representations of events through content that embodies humanity’s relationship to hostile or oppressive environments and the relationships between man and matter. This is a innovative body of work that uses moving image to describe fictive, future, spaces by filming ‘faked environments’ and by combining real-world footage, as well as ‘composite’ video made by collaging a variety of still and moving footage. Both research and practice ran alongside two related multi-disciplinary research, projects 'Here After Now' a proposal for a climate responsive, public artwork in partnership with Knight Science Journalism Fellow at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and 'Exploring the Psychological Effects of Visual Art Communicating Climate Change' led by Environmental Psychologist, Prof. C. Klockner (Nowegian University of Science and Technology). Phase 1 of the latter culminated in the presentation of post-graduate films at the Trondheim Film Festival (April 2013). Phase 2, a proposal and submission for a major research grant from the Norwegian Research Council, is underway. The Rose Art Museum is an educational and cultural institution focusing on collecting and exhibiting modern and contemporary art with an internationally important collection consisting of significant works by Jasper Johns, Andy Warhol, Matthew Barney and Jessica Stockholder. Recent solo shows include Bruce Connor, Dor Guez and Omer Fast. 'Coerced Nature' was part of the launch of the Rose Art Museum's new programme alongside a major retrospective of Ed Rucha and a commissioned installation by Walead Beshty. 'Coreced Nature' was in conjunction with the Ruth Ann and Nathan Perlmutter Award which honors the contribution of emerging contemporary artists. The final output was three museum-based video installations and two offsite video interventions on the campus of Brandeis University including a large-scale video projection within the tower of a local radio station.en
