Mystery, Desire, Superstition & Fear : New Projects from the Visual Effects Research Lab

Abstract

The Visual Effects Research Lab based at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design, University of Dundee is a ground-breaking transnational project funded by the European Union. VERL consolidates established world-class research at DJCAD in video art, digital film and 3D computer visualisation. VERL provides a well equipped laboratory environment for researchers and partners in the creative industries throughout the North Sea Region to carry out new and innovative research. New Synergies: The three-year project aims to link the worlds of film, art, technology and computer science. By sharing methodologies and promoting cross, trans and inter disciplinary understanding the lab will challenge established notions of visual thought. We aim to create new synergies between scientists, artists, clinicians, and film-makers. New Approaches; The team encompass a diverse range of practices and research portfolios which includes experts in video art, digital film, visual effects, medical visualization, animation and underwater imaging. New Technologies: The lab offers a near unique environment to realise projects. We have state of the art compositing, editing, animation and visualisation software. Our facilities include: 10 x Nuke compositing systems, 2 x Smoke worksations,10 x Maya 3D workstations, Ocular stereoscopic 3D compositing, HD projection, intergrated multi node rendering and secure Isilon media storage. We also have break out spaces and meeting room available to project partners. Facilitating R and D: Shrinking time lines and greater demands on facilities are now the norm for film post production companies. The result is less time to spend on R and D projects. VERL can offer North Sea based SME’s the opportunity to participate in or commission innovative research and development projects, helping to develop new markets and opportunities within the region.
