Abstract
Gallstones are common and affect up to 20% of adults overall. The prevalence is increasing with rising levels of obesity and aging populations.2 Although many people with gallstones are asymptomatic and the overall mortality is low (0.6%), the associated morbidity and economic cost are high at approximately US$6.2 billion (£4.6 billion) annually in the USA.
