dc.description.abstract | This study evaluates antibiotic usage trends in a UK secondary care setting, comparing pre-pandemic (2019) and pandemic (2020) data. The focus is on antibiotic use among adults admitted for respiratory tract infections (RTIs) and pneumonia, assessed using the WHO AWaRe classification and Defined Daily Dose (DDD). Findings reveal a notable increase in "Watch" category antibiotics, particularly azithromycin, clarithromycin, and levofloxacin, reflecting shifts in prescribing practices likely driven by COVID-19. These increases underscore the need for enhanced antimicrobial stewardship to prevent exacerbation of AMR. The study highlights the importance of careful antibiotic management to ensure patient safety and combat AMR. | en |
