The Teaching Company Scheme (TCS) I am participating in involves investigating the potential for using neural networks in the development of complex software products. Recently neural networks have enjoyed a resurgence in popularity in academia and industry (cf. DTI scheme), and it has become apparent that there are a number of ways in which the technology can be applied to real-world problems. Neural networks have a statistical basis, and they can be viewed as making these powerful statistical techniques available and accessible to non-staticians.en
