Investigating a link between teaching and research in the environmental sciences highlights the problem so admirably described by John Passmore (1974) in the early 1970s as being “forced to slosh around in the ooze that is interdisciplinary studies”. Not only are you presented with the problem of defining what is research and considering the many typologies (see details above ) , and with the arguments that surround definitions of ‘ teaching ’ (Biggs 2003), but you are also faced with the complex nature of environmental science itself.en
