Abstract
This report is the fifth within the series. It conveys a detailed view of the Indian economy with particular emphasis on issues that are of relevance to contemporary times. Examining the economic development of India, the report makes suggestions for helping economic growth that will benefit the poor. The report opens with an overview the Indian economy’s growth and illustrates macroeconomic trends, and growth potential. It explores agrarian crisis and farmers' suicides, trends in both unemployment and employment, the state of higher education, and the inequalities present in urban environments that affect quality of life. The report further discusses monetary policy, exchange rates, bank credit flow to agriculture and SMEs, competitive advantage and competitiveness of exports, the integration of Indian textiles sector with the global economy, and the implications on labour market of globalisation. Lastly an appendix is featured with time-series data on the macro economy.
