This text is a grounded introduction to "The Taming of the Shrew" by Shakespeare. It features traditional methods for performance analysis - criticism of the theatrical text and empirical descriptions of instances in its performance. It utilises feminism, Marxist historical analysis, and theatre semiotics. The dramatic and historico-political potentials of the performance text are explored alongside popular examples of contemporary productions, such as the RSC versions of John Barton in 1960 and Michael Bogdanov in 1978, Franco Zeffirelli's 1966 film and Jonathan Miller's production for the BBC Television/Time-Life Shakespeare series in 1982.en
