The Researching Academies Conference, hosted by the University of Gloucestershire in Cheltenham on 12 November last year and organised by the authors, was a unique one-day event, funded as part of a research project (a case study of an Academy) supported by a British Academy (BA) grant, with additional support and funding from BELMAS.1 It followed a researchers’ seminar, organised by Helen Gunter, held as part of the same project in May 2008 at the University of Manchester. The May seminar was reported in Management in Education (Gunter et al., 2008) and involved 13 researchers plus the case study research team.en
