        Abstract
John Buchanan is the most successful international cricket coach ever. Despite unorthodox methods and an unusual background he has influenced modern coaching practices. Buchanan’s appointment as coach by Queensland and Australia broke the mould, in that predecessors had all been famous ex-players. Buchanan’s inglorious playing career comprising 7 first-class matches; subsequently gaining a Sports Administration MA, undertaking university lecturing, and becoming National Volleyball Director, before adopting his first cricket coaching position.
