Challenges and opportunities in transitioning from advanced clinical practice to academia
Transitioning from an advanced clinical practitioner role to a position in academia presents unique challenges and opportunities. It involves a significant shift in responsibilities, expectations and professional development. The four pillars of advanced practice are at the core of the advanced clinical practitioner role: clinical practice, research, leadership and education. An academic position offers the opportunity for deeper investment and growth, particularly in the realms of research, leadership and education. Trainee advanced clinical practitioners rely on the expertise and guidance of knowledgeable, experienced lecturers throughout their rigorous training and development journey, underscoring the vital importance of expert clinicians to support this process. This article draws on one lecturer's transition from an advanced clinical practitioner to a senior lecturer in advanced clinical practice, exploring the challenges and opportunities encountered.
